Division 1 Division 2 |
1997-1998 End of Season reviewA few changes to the League membership commenced the start of this season. League champions, Whitby Town, were promoted to the Unibond League and Ferryhill Athletic were suspended from the League to allow them time to sort out a ground. (Ferryhill had been league members since 1923). Penrith returned to the Northern League to replace Whitby Town, and Marske United were elected to the second division. The League also had new sponsors - Arnott Insurance. Following the death last season of the former League President, Ernest Armstrong, a memorial trophy was introduced this season. At his family's suggestion, the League has instituted the cup, which is to be contested by four teams in Ernest's parliamentary constituency - Crook Town, Stanley United, Tow Law Town and Willington. The first winners were Crook Town. For this season only, clubs from the Northern League were allowed to compete in the Sunderland Shipowners Cup. This is a Wearside League cup, and the League were celebrating its centenary. Only previous members of the Wearside League were allowed to compete in it. Consett and Jarrow Roofing made it through to the Final, and Consett won the cup 3-0. Bedlington Terriers won the first division championship, and did the double by also winning the Northumberland Senior Cup. Durham City were relegated to the second division by a one goal difference. Durham had already completed their season, but had to wait for the result of the Stockton v Northallerton Town a week later. Stockton managed to draw 1-1, which condemned Durham to relegation. Tow Law Town became the League's second successive FA Vase finalists. Unfortunately their lost 1-0 to Tiverton Town - a late goal from Paul Varley. Chester-Le-Street and West Auckland Town returned to the first division after one season down. Chester-Le-Street were second division champions. Newcomers, Marske, clinched the third promotion spot. Dunston Fed. beat leg weary Tow Law Town 3-2 in the League Cup final at Durham City. Peterlee Newtown won their first NL trophy since the second division title in 1982-83, by winning the Craven Cup, 2-0. FA Vase
